Hamsters that live in the wild naturally don't have a nice little toilet. For the purpose of defecating and urinating, there is a toilet chamber in the hamster burrow, which extends deep below the earth's surface, in addition to the pantry and the nesting chamber. This serves the sole purpose of regular urination. This is very important to rodents, as they are clean animals.

Firstly, the toilet should have a fixed place in the cage, which must be maintained. Rodents are extremely clean and quickly get used to this place. If you have filled the toilet with sand, the rodent may use it as a sand bath. If you want to prevent this, place a suitable sand bath in the enclosure and replace the sand in the toilet with bedding. You can also fill the lower section with sand and cover it with bedding.

The hamster litter tray should always be cleaned daily. This is not difficult as you can remove it from the cage as a whole, empty it and fill it with new material. A thorough cleaning should be carried out once a week and if you notice that your hamster is ill, it is also a good idea to disinfect the litter tray.
