When does my dog need a muzzle?
A dog muzzle is useful or even mandatory in many situations.
Legal and safety-relevant situations
- Public transport (bus, train)
- Certain regions & legal requirements
- Listed dogs / risky situations
Please note: In many countries or cities, wearing a muzzle is mandatory, e.g. outside fenced dog zones.
Training and behavioural situations
- Anti-poison bait training
- At the vet or dog school
- For unsafe dog encounters
Important: A muzzle during training is not used as a punishment, but as protection - for example, if a dog picks up things on the ground or needs other impulse control.
Find the right size.
Which muzzle fits which dog size?
The correct fit of the dog muzzle is a top priority because the dog must be able to pant, drink and breathe. In addition, the right fit prevents chafing and pressure points, which can be painful for your dog. If the muzzle fits correctly and fits properly, your dog is more likely to accept it than if it is too big or too small.
Before you buy a new dog muzzle, take the following measurements:
- Length of your dog's muzzle
- The circumference of your dog's muzzle
- Circumference of your dog's head
A muzzle size chart will help you to choose the right size. Read the size chart and description for each product carefully and follow the description.
Whether it's a muzzle for small dogs (e.g. Chihuahua, Dachshund) or a muzzle for large dogs (e.g. German Shepherd, Labrador) - you'll find the right models here.
How to get your dog used to the new muzzle
A muzzle needs to be familiarised with so that your dog accepts it calmly. We'll show you step by step how to get your dog used to the muzzle in a positive and stress-free way.
1. Getting to know & connecting food
- Show the muzzle
- Feed treats through the basket
2. With muzzle in
- Dog voluntarily puts its muzzle in
- Without closure first
3. Close & reward
- Close for only a few seconds
- Reward directly
4. Increase duration slowly
- First indoors
- Short walks later
Our tip: Small soft treats or lick tubes are particularly suitable for training
